Bill and Sarah Walton have made charitable giving an active, strategic extension of their lives’ work, guided by a sweeping ambition: in Bill’s words, a “modest goal…to save Western civilization.”
That vision has taken shape across a wide range of causes. The Waltons support leading public policy organizations advancing free markets and religious liberty. At the same time, their philanthropy extends well beyond policy: to major arts institutions, local charities, and efforts in habitat and species preservation.
Rather than separating these priorities, the Waltons see them as part of a unified mission. Cultural preservation, local philanthropy, and public policy work all contribute to sustaining the institutions and values they believe underpin a free and flourishing society.
Bill brings a distinctly investor-minded approach to this work. Drawing on his background in private equity, he looks for organizations with strong leadership, clear missions, and a demonstrated ability to produce results. His strategy often begins with smaller, exploratory gifts that Bill compares to venture seed capital: “If I like what I see, I can go on to larger dollars.”
This hands-on, high-engagement style allows the Waltons to remain closely involved with dozens of organizations, from nationally recognized institutions to small, community-based nonprofits. Sarah, for her part, emphasizes the personal dimension of their giving—supporting local organizations and cultural institutions not only for their impact, but for the direct connection they foster with the community.
As their philanthropy has grown in both scale and complexity, the Waltons have also thought carefully about legacy. “Donor intent is a big problem. I think most people should view legacy giving as thorny,” Bill says. “I didn’t start out with any money and now that I have some, it’s hard to explain to people that it can be a problem, trying to see that it does some good. Steering it to end up in good hands is very difficult. That is where DonorsTrust can be very helpful.”
To manage both the practical and philosophical demands of their giving, the Waltons have partnered with DonorsTrust. Through their donor-advised fund, they are able to efficiently support a wide range of organizations—making everything from small, experimental grants to larger, sustained investments—without the administrative burden of managing each gift individually. “DonorsTrust does due diligence on the kinds of organizations I want to give to, has a big database, and great administrative procedures,” Bill says.
Just as importantly, DonorsTrust provides confidence that their charitable intent will be preserved over time, allowing the Waltons to focus on what matters most: identifying effective organizations, supporting meaningful work, and steadily advancing the causes they believe in.
