Karin Lips, president of the Network of Enlightened Women interviews DonorsTrust Vice President Peter Lipsett on “The Conservative Woman’s Guide.” The discussion centers on the role of philanthropy in American civil society and why getting started is simpler than most people think.
Peter makes the case that giving is less about how much you have and more about habit and intention. “When I hear ‘I can’t afford to give,’ what I really hear is ‘I choose not to give,'” he says bluntly. “If that makes you a little uncomfortable, it means you actually do want to be a giver.” Whether it’s $20 to an organization you believe in or two hours of your Saturday, the key is simply to start—and to keep building that muscle over time. The conversation also takes a broader look at the unique philanthropic tradition that has defined America since its founding, as well as the dangers of government crowding out private giving.
